The BMW X4 is a sportier, less practical sibling of the X3. Like the larger X6, it has a swoopy roofline to give it a coupe-like appearance; however, that affects visibility and rear seat headroom. All-wheel drive comes standard on all X4 models.
The X4 is a glass half-empty/half-full type of SUV. If you compare the X4 to its predecessor, the current model is an improvement with nicer interior materials and a better-looking design. Match it up to the GLC, though, and the BMW trails that Mercedes-Benz in build quality.
In a 2019 First Drive, we noted that the base engine offers enough power for daily driving. If you're looking for more speed, opt for the X4 M40i, which is significantly quicker than the X4 xDrive30i thanks to a potent six-cylinder engine. In MotorTrend testing, the X4 M40i hit 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. Both variants also handle well by SUV standards, but that comes at the cost of ride comfort. In fact, during MotorTrend's 2019 SUV of the Year evaluations, the X4's harsh suspension was one factor that kept it from becoming a finalist. The lack of practicality and poor rear visibility also drew the ire of judges for sacrificing too much in the name of style.
The hot X4 M proves you can make an SUV with capabilities that can nearly rival a sports car. In a 2020 First Drive, we noted that the twin-turbo I-6 pulls hard with minimal turbo lag and excellent mid-range torque. The X4 M's active M differential makes it more playful, allowing it to rotate just enough without scaring you (provided you keep the nannies on). Despite having excellent body control, the X4 M's heavy curb weight prevents it from feeling lithe and agile through corners.
