        Since its introduction as BMW's first i-branded vehicle for 2014, the i3 has seen quite an improvement in its hardware, even if the rest of the car remains the same. The first i3 models launched with just 70-90 miles of range, but with the battery upgrade for 2019, the car can now offers up to a much more usable 153-mile range. The i3 competes with other electric hatchbacks like the Kia Niro and Chevrolet Bolt, as well as the similarly priced Tesla Model 3.

        The i3's range isn't the longest, and its pricing not the most competitive, but the BMW still has a place in the segment. Look beyond the love-it-or-hate-it exterior styling to see an impressive interior design with thoughtful material choices . Hemp-derived plastics are sustainably sourced, the cloth upholstery is made from recycled plastic bottles, and even the available leather is stained with olive leaf extract instead of potentially harmful conventional dyes.

        We also loved the almost SUV-like seating position that, combined with the large windows and consequently airy cabin, provides superior outward visibility. Plus, with compact dimensions, the i3 has an ultra-tight turning circle and is exceptionally easy to drive around town.

        Our reviews are not all positive, though. The i3 can't compete in performance or range with newer EVs like the Chevrolet Bolt and Tesla Model 3. Even with its new-for-2019 larger battery, longer trips will necessitate that you tick the option box for the heavy generator-like range extender. Speaking of longer trips, the i3's ride quality falls apart at highway speeds, and the short wheelbase and narrow tires mean it can feel darty and unsettled. It's also more expensive by a significant margin than most of its competitors.

        Some will love the i3 for its numerous strengths, but in a field of modern electrics, the little BMW is a noticeable step behind.

        The i3 is offered with two versions of the same powertrain driving the rear wheels, and each version is offered with or without a gas-powered range extender. We'll start with the standard i3, whose electric motor sits between the rear wheels and develops 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. The sportier i3s rocks a version of the same motor in the same place driving the same wheels, but in this application, it generates 181 hp and 199 lb-ft.

        Both variants are offered with a 0.6-liter two-cylinder gas engine that doesn't send any power to the wheels, but rather acts as a gas-powered generator to charge the 42.2 kW-hr battery that powers the electric motors. Examples with the range extender can travel 126 miles on electricity alone and 200 miles before stopping to refill the two-cylinder's fuel tank. They achieve 100 mpg-e combined on electricity and 31 mpg combined with the gas engine sending electricity to the battery. All-electric i3 models are rated for 153 miles of electric range at 113 mpg-e combined.

        We haven't had a chance to test the i3s, but standard i3 models with and without the range extender hit 60 in 7.0 and 6.4 seconds, respectively. BMW estimates the i3s will reach 60 in 7.6 seconds with the range extender and 6.8 seconds without it, but we believe those numbers are a little conservative.

        In addition to the two different drivetrain options, the i3 interior is offered in one of four styles: Deka World, Mega World, Giga World, and Tera World. Really, all these looks change is the upholstery and interior trim. Deka World is standard and features dark cloth upholstery and matte silver trim. Mega World swaps the upholstery for gray leatherette seating with brown cloth highlights and "Electronic Brown" trim. Giga World takes things a step further with brown natural leather and gray wool upholstery with light eucalyptus wood trim, and Tera World pairs the eucalyptus with dark brown Vernasca leather seating.

        The i3 performs well in IIHS safety testing, though it hasn't been evaluated for its headlights or front crash prevention. It does earn top marks in four out of five crashworthiness tests, with the only exception being the evaluation for head restraints and seats, for which it received a second-best rating of Acceptable. The i3 earns the same Acceptable score for its child seat anchor ease of use.

        No active safety features are included as standard, but the Technology + Driving Assistant package adds curve-adaptive LED headlights, stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, and auto high beams.

        The i3 seats four, with 40.5 inches of legroom in the front row and just 31.9 inches in the rear. Cargo volume measures 15.1 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 36.9 cubic feet with the rears folded down.

        Every i3 sports a 6.5-inch infotainment display that includes Apple CarPlay and built-in navigation. The Technology and Driving Assistant package adds a larger 10.3-inch screen with a dynamic range map and real-time traffic, as well as a universal garage door opener integrated into the rear-view mirror.

        2020 BMW i3

        The entry-level i3 comes standard with a 170-hp electric motor, 42 kW-hr battery, 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, front and rear parking sensors, and power-folding heated side mirrors. Inside, you get a 6.5-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and navigation, auto-dimming mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, cloth upholstery, 8-way manually adjustable heated front seats, and a proximity key. Interior material choices are determined by which of four interior-themes you choose.

        2020 BMW i3s

        Stepping up to the i3s adds a 184-hp electric motor, lowered sport suspension, 20-inch alloy wheels and wider tires, flared wheel arches in high-gloss black, and black A-pillar and roof trim.
