        Bentley Continental GT Expert Review

        Bentley redesigned the Continental GT Coupe for 2019 leaving the 2018 model as a convertible only and introduced the new Timeless Series and Galene limited-edition models.

        The 2018 Continental GT is available as a convertible (the 2019 model is a coupe) and is part of Bentley's lineup that also consists of the range-topping Mulsanne, the Flying Spur sedan, and the Bentayga SUV.

        2018 Bentley Continental GT V8: The base GT V8 model comes standard with a twin-turbo V-8, 20-inch alloy wheels, air suspension with a continuous damping system, HID headlights with LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, dual stainless steel exhaust finishers, premium hide leather upholstery, Dark Fiddleback veneer, a leather and chrome-trimmed gear shifter, seating for four, Bentley embossed door sill plates, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with SiriusXM satellite radio, an eight-speaker audio system, and a four-layer insulated fabric top.

        2018 Bentley Continental GT V8 S: The GT V8 S receives a more powerful version of the twin-turbo V-8 and increases the amount of available exterior colors to 17 (up from seven), increases the number of available interior roof colors to eight (up from four), increases the amount of available convertible tops to five (up from three), adds a choice of six two-tone interior color choices (up from one monotone color), and increases the amount of available interior leather colors to 17 (up from four). The V8 S adds LED taillights with special trim details inside the lamp, piano black veneer, a knurled sports gear shifter with leather, and a Beluga gloss front splitter, side sills, rear extension, and a diffuser.

        2018 Bentley Continental GT: The twin-turbo W-12 powered Continental GT adds a Burr Walnut veneer and optional features and packages that are not available on the GT V8 S such as the Mulliner Driving package, choice of six single-finish veneers, carbon fiber trim, a choice of two steering wheels, drilled alloy pedals, a neck warmer, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and seats by Mulliner.

        2018 Bentley Continental GT Speed: The GT Speed comes powered by a more powerful twin-turbo W-12 engine and adds sport-tuned air suspension with a continuous damping control system, 21-inch Speed dark alloy wheels, dark exterior accents, dark LED taillights, unique stainless steel exhaust finishers, unique GT Speed interior colors, Speed emblem stitching, piano black veneer, diamond quilted seats, a premium leather-wrapped Sports steering wheel, drilled alloy pedals, and the Mulliner Driving Specification package that includes an indented leather headliner and a choice of 21-inch wheels.

        2018 Bentley Continental Supersports: The range-topping Supersports is powered by 700-hp version of the W-12 engine and adds carbon ceramic brakes with red or black calipers, a torque vectoring system, 21-inch twenty spoke forged alloy wheels, black tint exterior trim, black logos and badges, black gloss exhaust finishers, carbon fiber front and rear bumper accents, hood vents, and side skirts, the Supersports two-tone interior with choice of 11 interior leathers and 18 accent colors, Supersports embroidered headrests, an Eliade cloth headliner, piano black veneer with high gloss checkered carbon fiber pattern (or a choice of three alternatives), an Alcantara and premium leather-trimmed Supersports steering wheel, a knurled gear shifter with Alcantara, and Supersports embossed door sill plates.

        The Supersports can be optioned with a Supersports titanium exhaust system, carbon fiber exterior mirrors, a high-gloss carbon fiber engine cover, dark aluminum fascia panels, a Naim audio system, and personalized headrest embroidery and door sills.

        The entry-level GT V8 is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 that produces 500 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque, but the V8 S' engine produces more at 520 hp and 502 lb-ft and delivers an EPA-rated 15/25 mpg city/highway and 14/24 mpg for the convertible (2017). The GT is equipped with a 582-hp, 531-lb-ft 6.0-liter twin-turbo W-12 engine and is rated at 12/20 mpg. The 6.0-liter twin-turbo W-12 engine in the GT Speed produces 633 hp and 620 lb-ft but the Supersports is tuned to produce a whopping 700 hp and 750 lb-ft. All engines are backed by an eight-speed automatic and are only available with all-wheel drive. In Motor Trend testing, the 2017 Bentley Continental Supersports hit 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and stopped from 60 mph in 115 feet.

        All Continental GT models feature an 8.0-inch multimedia touchscreen with a navigation system, SiriusXM satellite radio, a 30 GB hard drive, Bluetooth, and an available Wi-Fi hotspot. The standard 420-watt, eight-speaker audio system uses Balanced Mode Radiator speaker technology. The upgraded 1,100-watt Naim audio system features 11 Balanced Mode Radiator speakers.

        In a First Drive review of the 2017 Bentley Continental Supersports, we noted that even though the car is the fastest Bentley road car in history, "it remains, above all, a luxury car." "The Supersports rides 0.4 inch lower than regular Conti GTs. Spring and damper rates are stiffer—up 45 percent at the front, and 35 percent at the rear—and the rear stabilizer bar is 50 percent stiffer. Bushes throughout the suspension have been stiffened between 30 and 70 percent," we said. "That W-12 engine is utterly magnificent, delivering imperious thrust that simply demolishes distances between corners. Artfully tuned exhaust rumble apart, the big Bentley is otherwise so smooth and refined you tend to arrive at corners carrying much more speed than you expect," we continued. However, "it's no track rat, the Bentley Continental Supersports— it's simply too big, too heavy." "It's the last of the line, this Supersports. An all-new Continental GT, built using the very different front/mid-engine vehicle architecture shared with the?Porsche Panamera, will make its debut later this year. But it's the best of the lot," we concluded.

        In a First Test review of the 2016 Bentley Continental GT Speed, we said that "piloting the Continental GT Speed Convertible through the canyons is definitely entertaining, if not comical. We expected a clumsy mess, but instead got cool and composed."

        "While the canyons were fun," we continued, "the Bentley excels on the open highway. The air suspension does an outstanding job of erasing road blemishes and there are zero hints of wind noise. We wouldn't be surprised if that soft top were bulletproof. To get an idea of how quiet it is at highway speeds, ride in a?Mercedes S-Class?while wearing earplugs. It's that silent." Unfortunately, "the tech, however, is woefully stuck in the early 2000s. The voice command system obeys just as well as a pug puppy and connecting Bluetooth devices requires a clumsy process done with the steering wheel controls and not the main touchscreen. USB ports? Zero," we said. We concluded by saying, "Despite our test car's technological shortcomings and eye-searing shade of paint, it's very much a timeless cruiser and a rolling expression of economic privilege with an as-tested price of $289,795. That said, there are other options with just as much exclusivity, but a tad more tech."
