        Bentley Bentayga Expert Review

        Some might scoff at the idea of a Bentley SUV, but what might have once seemed like sacrilege is now the storied British automaker's best-selling product. Bentley teased the Bentayga with the EXP 9 F concept back in 2012 and released the production car as a 2017 model. Since then, the segment has filled out: the Rolls Royce Cullinan, Aston Martin DBX, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, and Range Rover SVAutobiography all compete in this space.

        We were as skeptical as the rest of you when Bentley decided to build an SUV. Upon driving it, though, it's clear that the Bentayga is every bit as Bentley as the Continental or Flying Spur; it's just a few inches higher off the ground. Despite its colossal curb weight and regardless of powertrain choice, the Bentayga succeeds in doing that "rapidly accumulating speed" thing modern Bentleys excel at. And despite the low-profile tires and crossover construction, it's much better off road than we had expected.

        Especially with the 48-volt electric anti-roll bars, the Bentayga is remarkably flat through corners. Driving down a fun road in Sport mode, it's nearly indistinguishable from the Flying Spur sedan, save the ride height. It's also the first Bentley to offer a plug-in hybrid system.

        As powerful and luxurious and capable as the Bentayga might be, it's also the least expensive Bentley you can currently buy. The hybrid model is actually the most affordable Bentley you can currently buy, but even that car costs more than six Honda Civics. Plus, active safety tech like adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist that are standard on that Civic will cost thousands to add to your already six-figure Bentayga, and that's disappointing. We also weren't impressed with the Bentayga's base sound system, going so far as to say a $23,000 Nissan had a better set-up than the standard one on the Bentley. If those issues and the polarizing styling don't bother you, the Bentayga could be worth consideration.

        Luxury is choice, yes? Bentley offers two traditional gas powerplants under the hood of the Bentayga; both with two turbochargers and both mated to an eight-speed automatic. The eight-cylinder Bentayga is powered by a version of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 cranking out 542 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque. Bentley says it'll motivate the two-and-a-half ton SUV to 60 in 4.4 seconds and eventually help it reach 180 mph.

        That said, if you want the most power in your biggest Bentley, you'll need to opt for the W-12. It's heavier, yes, and thirstier, sure, but the thrust it offers is incredible in its magnitude and ever-present in its delivery. In the standard Bentayga W12, it makes "just" 600 hp and 664 lb-ft, but if you graduate to the Bentayga Speed, it's tuned to 626 hp. The automaker says the most powerful model will reach 60 in 3.8 seconds and top out at 190 mph.

        That's right; Bentley makes hybrids now. The Bentayga is the marque's first crack at a hybrid powertrain, though it says there will be hybridized versions of every car in the lineup by 2023 and that Bentley will debut its first EV by 2025. For the meantime, the Bentayga Hybrid borrows a plug-in system from the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid. That means a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 rated at 335 hp and 332 lb-ft, plus a 94-kW electric motor that adds 126 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Total system output comes to 443 hp and 516 lb-ft. Plus, thanks to the 17.3-kWh battery, the Bentayga Hybrid can travel up to 18 miles on electric range and achieve an estimated 45 mpg-e in its standard hybrid drive mode.

        Mulliner is Bentley's in-house customization department. The name comes from the H. J. Mulliner & Co. coachbuilder that had been operating as a family business building horse-drawn carriages before it transitioned to automobiles. If the 85 or so paint options or 15 different leathers don't suit you—or you want your monogram embroidered onto the seatback—you'll need to talk to the folks at Mulliner. There are also Mulliner special edition models, like the original Bentayga Mulliner, the Bentayga Field Sports by Mulliner, and the equestrian-inspired Bentayga by Mulliner.
