        Audi RS 3 Expert Review

        • No changes from 2019

The RS 3 is the sportiest version of Audi's subcompact luxury sedan. Positioned at the top of the A3 range, it packs more power and enhanced dynamics even over the quick S3. With an unusual turbocharged five-cylinder engine, performance-tuned version of Audi's Quattro AWD, and other go-fast upgrades, the RS 3 is built first and foremost to thrill the driver.

Introduced for the 2017 model year, the RS 3 carries over unchanged for 2020.

Drive the regular A3 and the RS 3 back-to-back, and you'll hardly believe they're based on the same general structure. Audi succeeded in elevating the RS 3 far beyond the run-of-the-mill A3, producing a genuinely special driver's delight in the process.

At its heart is a turbo-five engine, delivering its near 400 hp in a nearly lag-free, exceptionally linear fashion. Shifts from the dual-clutch transmission are seamless, although the feel of the paddle shifters hint at the car's entry-level basis. That's a small gripe though, especially when whacking through gears to instigate the engine's delightfully raucous exhaust bark.

Audi's Quattro AWD system is present in the RS 3, and its calibration totally belies the car's front-drive underpinnings. Unlike the standard A3 or even the S3, the RS 3 has a clear rear-drive bias. That, combined with super-responsive steering, provides surefooted, highly controllable handling that can be provoked into slight drifts. Of course, Quattro also ensures excellent off-the-line traction, enabling sub 4.0-second 0-60 mph launches.

As a daily driver, the RS 3 is a bit extreme; its ride quality is quite stiff and available carbon-ceramic front brakes sharp in their responses. Because it's based on the A3, the RS 3 has a cramped back seat and small trunk. But it's always a thrill from behind the wheel, as ready for the road as it is a racetrack.

The Audi RS 3 packs a turbocharged 2.5-liter I-5 engine producing 394 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. Output is routed to Audi's Quattro AWD system via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. In MotorTrend testing, a slightly more powerful (400 hp) 2017 RS 3 launched from 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds. EPA-rated fuel economy comes in at 19/28 mpg city/highway.

Although the IIHS has not specifically evaluated the RS 3, the A3 on which it's based earned 2019 Top Safety Pick designation. The A3 received top Good scores in all crashworthiness tests. Its standard front crash prevention system earned the top Superior score, as it avoided collisions in both 12-mph and 25-mph tests. The headlights, which include LED projector low beams and LED reflector high beams, earned an Acceptable score, the second-highest rating.

The NHTSA has completed a partial evaluation for the RS 3, giving it a four-star (out of five) rollover score. Consider that the standard A3 earned the same rollover score, as well as four-star frontal crash and five-star side crash scores for a five-star overall rating.

Forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking is the only standard active safety or driver-assist feature, while adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and rear and side cross-traffic alert are optional extras. Additional second-row side airbags can be optioned to supplement the standard airbag arrangement.

The RS 3's trunk has 10.0 cubic feet of cargo capacity, but standard 40/20/40 split-folding second-row seats let larger items fit inside.

In the front row, headroom measures 36.5 inches, and legroom measures 41.2 inches. Second-row headroom and legroom come in at at 36.1 and 35.1 inches, respectively.

The RS 3 is equipped with a 7.0-inch infotainment screen, which is controlled by a knob mounted behind the shift lever. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth streaming, and two front-row USB ports are included standard; second-row USB ports are available. The standard gauge cluster includes a small color information display, but the optional Virtual Cockpit fits a 12.3-inch reconfigurable display in place of that screen and the conventional analog gauges. Choosing the Virtual Cockpit also adds GPS navigation. A 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium audio system is standard.

2020 Audi RS 3: Available only in one trim level, the RS 3 is equipped with 19-inch two-tone alloy wheels, a trunklid spoiler, LED headlights and taillights, and power-adjustable and folding heated side mirrors. Signature Audi RS design details like dual oval exhaust outlets, matte aluminum side mirror caps, and aggressive front and rear fascias further set the RS 3 apart from standard A3 models. Inside, seating surfaces are leather upholstered with diamond stitching, front sport bucket seats are heated but manually adjustable, the flat-bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters is wrapped in faux suede, and silver woven fiber trim is complemented by ambient lighting details. Technology features include a 7.0-inch infotainment screen, front-row USB ports, and 14-speaker premium audio system. Two-zone automatic climate control, auto-dimming rear and side mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, keyless entry with push-button start, front and rear parking sensors, and a panoramic sunroof are among conveniences and niceties.
