        Acura TLX Expert Review

        The TLX replaced Acura's TL and TSX sedans when it debuted for the 2015 model year. It sits in the middle of Acura's sedan lineup in terms of size and price, above the Honda Civic-based ILX and below the full-size RLX. The model received a mid-cycle refresh for 2018, but 2020 is likely to be its final model year before being redesigned for its second generation, which was previewed last year with the Acura Type S concept. The TLX is a compact luxury sedan that competes with cars like the Alfa Romeo Giulia, Genesis G70, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, and Lexus IS. Its pricing also overlaps with higher-end versions of its corporate sibling, the Honda Accord.

        If you want an all-wheel-drive luxury sedan with great feature content for the money, the TLX is hard to beat. Even with standard features including LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, ambient interior lighting, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the TLX still undercuts its competition. Many of those savings are a result of the four-cylinder base engine and standard front-wheel drive, but buyers more interested in a luxury sedan than a sport sedan probably won't mind.

        Not that it's a bore to drive. Although it doesn't offer the sharpness or rear-drive adjustability of an Alfa Romeo Giulia or Genesis G70, the TLX is more fun than expected, and its naturally aspirated V-6 exhaust note is a pleasure that's rapidly disappearing in new cars. If the TLX's replacement has a six-cylinder option, expect it to be turbocharged. We did notice significant brake fade and a mushy brake pedal, both during performance testing and midway through a spirited canyon drive.

        The car's interior includes some nice luxury touches with contrast stitching and piping on higher trim levels. The novel dual-screen infotainment system operates well but definitely looks last-gen. This car's most tempting competition is a loaded Honda Accord, which was updated more recently and whose cabin we actually prefer. That said, if AWD is a necessity and you're craving a luxury badge, you won't regret driving off the lot in a TLX. It just might be worth waiting a year to see the new model.

        The TLX is offered with four- and six-cylinder engine options. Base models have a 2.4-liter four-cylinder under the hood that generates 206 hp and 182 lb-ft of torque and is mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic with a torque converter to smooth out shifts. The V-6 model uses a nine-speed conventional automatic paired with a 3.5-liter engine developing 290 hp and 267 lb-ft.

        Four-cylinder TLX models are only offered with FWD, but it works with Acura's four-wheel steering system to improve handling. Models specced with the V-6 can be paired with FWD and four-wheel steering or Acura's torque-vectoring SH-AWD.

        In our First Test, a four-cylinder FWD model accelerated to 60 in 7.3 seconds. A test of a V-6 TLX A-Spec AWD saw the heavier, more powerful model completing the same 0-60 run in 6.0 seconds. Four-cylinder TLXs are rated at 23/32-33 mpg city/highway and models with the V-6 return 20/29-31 mpg.

        The TLX performs well for the most part in IIHS safety testing, earning the highest possible score of Good in four of five crashworthiness tests and a one-step-down Acceptable rating in the Small overlap front: driver-side test. Standard LED headlights receive an Acceptable rating as well, and the TLX gets a superior front crash prevention rating thanks to standard auto emergency braking. It fared better in NHTSA safety testing, in which the TLX earned a five-star overall safety rating and perfect scores in frontal crash, side crash, and rollover safety tests.

        Even entry-level TLXs have the necessities of driver-assist active safety tech—auto emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane keep assist. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, rain-sensing wipers, and a 360-degree camera system are all available on higher trims.

        Every TLX model seats five, with two up front and three across the rear bench. Legroom up front measures 42.6 inches but rear passengers make do with just 34.5 inches. The TLX's trunk holds 14.3 cubic feet of cargo volume.

        All TLXs have a dual-screen infotainment system with an 8.0-inch touchscreen in the center stack. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio capability are all standard. The base audio system is a seven-speaker unit, but Technology, A-Spec, and Advance models have a 10-speaker ELS premium audio system. Those higher trim levels also include built-in navigation.

        All TLX models come standard with a four-cylinder engine and FWD with the exception of the TLX Advance package ,which is only offered with the V-6 and AWD. Six-cylinder non-Advance models can be had with FWD or AWD.

        2020 Acura TLX Standard

        The entry-level TLX is extremely well-equipped considering its price point. The base sedan features a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, eight-speed dual-clutch automatic, front-wheel drive with four-wheel steering, 17-inch pewter gray 10-spoke wheels (V-6 models get 18-inch pewter gray wheels), power moonroof, LED headlights and tail lights, heated side mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators, and reverse gear side mirror tilt-down.

        Inside, you get a leatherette-trimmed interior, 10-way driver's seat with power lumbar support, 4-way power passenger's seat (V-6 models get an 8-way power passenger seat), heated front seats, keyless entry with push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with tilt and telescopic steering column, leather-wrapped shift knob, ambient interior lighting, a dual-screen infotainment system with an 8.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and seven-speaker audio, plus auto emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane keep assist.

        2020 Acura TLX Technology Package

        Ticking the box for the Technology Package get buyers perforated Milano premium leather-trimmed interior, GPS-linked automatic climate control, voice recognition system, frameless rearview mirror, built-in navigation, 10-speaker ELS premium audio, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rain-sensing wipers.

        Models equipped with the Technology package and the V-6 engine also get 19-inch pewter gray alloy wheels, interior contrast stitching and piping, 12-way driver's seat with power lumbar support and extendable thigh bolsters,

        2020 Acura TLX A-Spec

        The A-Spec is a mostly a sport-inspired appearance package, offering 19-inch shark gray wheels and wider tires, A-Spec front and rear bumpers, A-Spec side sills, round LED fog lights, a gloss black decklid spoiler, dark chrome grille and lighting details, black window molding, round dual exhaust outlets, interior contrast stitching and piping, red accent lighting, red-on-black gauges, and a black headliner, as well as sport-tuned suspension, heated and ventilated front seats, and front and rear parking sensors.

        2020 Acura TLX Advance Package

        The top-spec TLX Advance package includes the 3.5-liter V-6 engine, nine-speed automatic, SH-AWD, an electronic gear selector, 19-inch pewter gray wheels, rectangular LED fog lights, auto dimming side mirrors, puddle light welcome lighting, a body-color decklid spoiler, heated outboard rear seats, a heated steering wheel, white accent lighting, remote engine start, and a 360-degree camera system.
